Anambra State Government says it is shifting focus to an enlightened and preventive aspect of erosion and flooding control in the state.

To achieve this objective, arrangements had been concluded to stage a strategic town hall meeting with stakeholders to proffer solutions to environmental degradation challenges currently ravaging the state.

The State Commissioner for Environment, Engr Felix Odimegwu who stated this during a media briefing to announce the proposed town hall meeting, pointed out that the state budget alone cannot service erosion sites in the state.

While describing the theme for the meeting “Clean, Green And Sustainable Anambra” he underscored the importance of a community participation approach to ensure a better and safer environment.

“We want to make our people more aware of their environment, the action and inactions that impact the environment. We will be launching, Clean, Green And Sustainable Anambra to enlighten our people about new environmental laws and policies.”

He lamented that about 30% of the state landmass has been damaged by erosion with about 1000 erosion sites out of which intervention is ongoing in some sites. He added that government would seek the support of Development Partners to tackle the erosion and flooding menace.

He attributed man-made factors as major causes of erosion in the state and called for attitudinal change by residents in the fight against the menace.
