The Oyo State Government in Southwest Nigeria has expressed readiness to adopt and localise the Nigeria Startup Act, aimed at providing the legal framework for tech industries in the state and assisting youths in the ICT sector to develop entrepreneurship with their innovations.

The Special Assistant to Governor Seyi Makinde on ICT and E-governance, Mr Bayo Akande Jnr., disclosed this on Thursday at a capacity training organised at the state secretariat to unbundle the many prospects of the Nigeria Startup Act.

Akande explained that for the Oyo State ICT sector to achieve great strides in the comity of states in the country, the need to key into the Nigeria startup initiative has become imperative.

He expressed confidence that upon transmission to the state House of Assembly, the Nigeria Startup Act, would receive quick attention and expand Oyo State’s digital economy.

The first female professor of Computer Science in Africa, Prof. Adenike Osofisan, who graced the event, acknowledged that the Startup Act if adopted by the state, would revolutionise ICT in the country while cautioning youths to take advantage of the initiative to make money legally in ICT, rather than engage in cyber crimes.

Other stakeholders, who spoke at the event, acknowledged the prospect of the initiative while hinting that the project would also assist ICT entrepreneurs with funds to grow their innovations.

Participants also agreed that the Nigeria Startup Act would unlock the potential of the Nigerian ecosystem and enable young Nigerians to contribute to the nation’s economy.

The Nigeria Startup Act project is a joint initiative by Nigeria’s Tech Startup Ecosystem and the Presidency to harness the potential of the nation’s digital economy through friendly legal frameworks.
