Lewandowski header denies Spain, Germany beat Portugal in six-goal thriller

Robert Lewandowski’s second-half equalizer denied Spain their first victory in the ongoing Euro 2020 competition after the game ended in a 1-1 draw on Saturday night.

Alvaro Morata’s 26 minutes strike gave Luis Enrique’s side the lead and the strike was awarded following a check by VAR.

Both sides created chances in quick succession but none was taken as Spain went into the break ahead by a lone goal.

Lewandowski then equalized for Poland nine minutes after the restart of the second half with a clinical header.

The Bayern Munich striker climbed highest and found the bottom corner for his first goal of the tournament and a 1-1 scoreline.

A penalty was awarded by VAR for a soft touch on Moreno, and the forward saw his kick hit the post while Morata could not convert the rebound, much to the relief of Poland.

Earlier in the day, Germany scored twice in each half to earn a 4-2 comeback victory over Portugal, defending European champions, in their encounter at Allianz Arena in Munich.

Cristiano Ronaldo had given Portugal the lead with his third goal of the tournament but Joachim Low’s side recovered to put four goals past the Selecao — including two own goals — to claim their first win of the tournament.

France were held by Hungary 1-1 in an earlier encounter,  to top the group ahead of Germany and Portugal on three points each.

Hungary are in the last place with one point, meanwhile, any of the four nations can still qualify in the final match of the group.

Portugal will face France in a repeat of the Euro 2016 final, while Germany plays Hungary in Munich, both games taking place on Wednesday.
