Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, on Friday presented cheques totaling N8 million to the families of 13 police officers who lost their lives in the line of duty.

The presentation took place during the command’s monthly meeting at the Police Command Headquarters in Awka, according to a statement released on Saturday by the command’s spokesman, SP Tochukwu Ikenga.

Among those honored was an Inspector who was mistakenly and fatally shot by a fellow officer at a Police Observation Point along the Onitsha-Owerri Expressway near Danaks Fuel Station. The other 12 officers also died while serving in active duty.

SP Ikenga explained that the financial support forms part of the Inspector-General of Police’s initiative to provide relief and support to the families of officers who make the ultimate sacrifice.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, during the ceremony on June 28, 2025, recognized the bravery and dedication of the fallen officers. He personally handed over cheques worth over N8 million to the beneficiaries under the Group Life Assurance and the IGP Family Welfare Schemes,” the statement read.

The gesture is intended not only to offer financial succor to bereaved families but also to motivate serving officers by reaffirming the Force’s commitment to their welfare.

While addressing the recipients, CP Orutugu commended the Inspector-General of Police for prioritizing the welfare of personnel and urged the families to invest the funds wisely to secure the future of their dependents.

The meeting also featured security briefings from Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers, during which the CP outlined new strategies to enhance law enforcement and public safety across Anambra State.

Lectures were delivered by representatives from a leading insurance company, the Police National Housing Fund, the Pension Office, and ACP Anietie Eyoh, who spoke on operational strategy.

CP Orutugu concluded by assuring residents of Anambra that the police command remains steadfast in its mission to maintain peace and security in the state.
