Women Environmental Programme (WEP), in collaboration with Christian Aid, has trained 60 smallholder farmers from Nasarawa, Benue, and Kaduna states on the adoption of smart agricultural practices.

Smart agriculture involves the use of innovative technologies, data analysis, and sustainable methods to increase crop yields, minimise waste, and promote efficient farming.

Speaking at the close of a two-day training in Lafia, Nasarawa on Thursday, Ms Damaris Ujah, Head of Programmes at WEP, said the initiative was aimed at boosting food production and ensuring food security.

She explained that smart agricultural practices improve productivity, sustainability, and profitability while reducing environmental impact.

According to her, the training also provided a platform for participants to reflect on the outcomes and challenges of a climate resilience project implemented by the organisations.

Ujah commended the support of state governments, especially in empowering women farmers, and called for the continuation of such efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change.

Also speaking, Mr Fagbite Bamidele, Senior Disaster Risk Reduction and Peace Building Specialist with Christian Aid, encouraged farmers, and women, to adopt smart practices that support national food sufficiency.

Mr Isuwa Danlami from the Nasarawa Ministry of Environment and Mr Samuel Terungwa of the Benue Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, noted that smart agriculture had the potential to transform rural livelihoods and improve food production.

They pledged to apply the knowledge gained to enhance agricultural practices and create jobs in their respective states.

The event was attended by government officials, traditional rulers, farmer groups, and persons with disabilities.

It highlighted the importance of climate-smart agriculture in achieving long-term food security.
