The Governor of Gombe state, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya has secured the approval of the Federal Government of Nigeria for the establishment of a state-of-the-art veterinary hospital under the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) Project.
The Gombe State Government considers this achievement a major milestone in Inuwa Yahaya-led administration’s efforts to transform the livestock sector of Gombe State.
The facility, once completed, will serve as a centre for diagnosis, treatment, research, and training, playing a crucial role in advancing livestock health and productivity in Gombe and the wider northern region.
The National Project Coordinator of L-PRES, Mr. Sanusi Abubakar, who led a high-level federal delegation on a two-day technical mission to the state, confirmed the development.

The team assessed ongoing interventions and reviewed implementation progress across various livestock-focused initiatives.
According to Mr. Abubakar, the veterinary hospital represents the next phase of critical infrastructure development aimed at reinforcing animal health systems, enhancing disease surveillance, and strengthening certification processes for livestock products, both for domestic consumption and export.
The hospital is to be sited within the newly established 184-hectare Agro-Livestock Development Zone in Gombe, which already hosts an ultramodern abattoir, an international livestock market, a tannery, and a leather factory.

These are part of the Yahaya administration’s broader strategy to position Gombe as a national hub for livestock innovation and agribusiness.
The federal delegation, comprising representatives from the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, animal health experts from the L-PRES National Coordination Office, and other technical specialists, conducted preliminary assessments and feasibility studies at the proposed location.
Expressing satisfaction with the level of preparedness and progress, the National Coordinator praised the commitment of the state and reiterated the readiness of the national office to support the successful delivery of the project.
“This is a pilot project. Nothing of this scale has been done elsewhere in the country. Gombe is the first, and we hope it will serve as a model for other states,” he remarked.
Professor Usman Bello Abubakar, Gombe State L-PRES Coordinator, who conducted the team around the project site, described the initiative as a landmark achievement for the state.
He thanked the national office for selecting Gombe to pioneer such a significant intervention.
Prof. Abubakar further gave assurance of the state government’s unwavering dedication to ensuring the success of the veterinary hospital and all related livestock initiatives under the L-PRES programme.
In her remarks, the Project Manager of Lubell Nigeria Ltd, the firm handling the construction, Ms. Asabe, pledged quality delivery and timely completion in full adherence to contract standards and specifications.
