The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has confirmed that Niger State has so far recorded 150 positive cases of cholera since the outbreak began, with 16 fatalities reported.

During an advocacy visit to the Emir of Minna, Alhaji Farouq Bahago, UNICEF’s Chief of Kaduna Field Office, Dr Gerida Birukila—represented by Health Specialist Dr Ahmed Tsofo—disclosed that 451 people had been isolated. Of these, 150 were confirmed positive through rapid diagnostic testing, treated, and discharged.

Dr Birukila noted that the initial 13 deaths reported at the start of the epidemic had risen by three, bringing the toll to 16.

She emphasised UNICEF’s continued collaboration with the government to contain the outbreak and prevent further spread.

The visit also addressed other public health concerns, including polio, measles, and the low rate of exclusive breastfeeding in the state.

“We sought the Emir’s support for the upcoming polio eradication campaign, the ongoing cholera response, and the introduction of measles and rubella vaccines scheduled for October,” Dr Tsofo explained.

He stressed that eliminating these diseases would require close cooperation between government agencies and traditional institutions.

In his response, the Emir of Minna pledged the Emirate’s full support.

“We will continue to talk and work in the interest of our people. We will support your efforts and complement your activities in all four areas of intervention,” he said, offering prayers for the success of UNICEF’s health initiatives in the state.
