President Bola Tinubu has awarded a contract for the construction of Oju–Ogoja Federal Road, which links Benue and Cross River States, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to infrastructure development in the region.

The President disclosed this in a message delivered by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF Sen. George Akume, during this year’s New Yam festival held at Oju Local Government Headquarters at the weekend.

President Tinubu commended the Igede Traditional Council in Benue State, North Central Nigeria, for their efforts in preserving the culture of the Igede Agba new yam festival, emphasising its role in promoting heritage and unity among the people.

The President highlighted the traditional council’s importance in fostering peace, unity, and progress within the state, as well as its contribution to his administration’s development initiatives.

A statement by the Special Adviser on Public Affairs, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr. Terrence Kuanum, said President Tinubu also praised the involvement of the Igede-speaking people in peace-building efforts in troubled areas.

“Your Royal Highness, the Adiharu of Igede, CP Oga Ero Rtd. I wish to commend you very specially for hosting yet another successful edition of this rich cultural festival (the Igede Agba new yam festival).”

Sen. Akume conveyed President Tinubu’s appreciation for being invited to the event, noting the government’s commitment to driving growth and development across all sectors of the economy.

“The renewed hope agenda of President Tinubu has been able to touch on every region of the country, with the economy growing on a positive trajectory as both the base and superstructure are accelerating rapidly”.

In response, the Paramount Ruler of Igede Nation, Adiharu of Igede, CP Oga Ero Rtd, thanked the President and expressed gratitude for the infrastructure developments in the north central region.

The Monarch welcomed the news of the road construction project, which he acknowledged would alleviate longstanding transportation challenges between Benue and Cross River State.

“We are overwhelmed with joy to receive the news of the award for the construction of Oju-Ogoja Road. This road has been a nightmare to us over the decades until your government graciously came to our rescue.”

The annual Igede Agba festival, established in 1957, serves as a moment for reflection and reconciliation within the community, symbolising the importance of cultural heritage in fostering unity and progress.
