Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, has called for greater youth participation in Nigeria’s Armed Forces and other security agencies, identifying negative public perceptions of uniformed services as a challenge to recruitment and urging the promotion of credible role models to inspire national service.
Soludo made the call at the memorial service for retired Lieutenant General Chikadibia Isaac Obiakor at Dr Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka, where military officers, government officials, family members and other mourners gathered to honour the late general’s contributions to Nigeria and international peacekeeping.

The governor described Obiakor as a distinguished son of Awka whose military career demonstrated how dedicated service could contribute to national security, international peace and Nigeria’s reputation abroad.

He expressed concern that unfavourable public perceptions of the military, police and other security agencies could discourage young Nigerians from enlisting, stressing the importance of exemplary officers in encouraging the next generation to embrace service to the country.

Soludo also urged community leaders and elders to mentor young people and maintain strong ties with their communities, saying responsible leadership and positive role models could encourage patriotism and public service.
He said the true measure of a person’s achievements extended beyond international recognition to the positive impact made on the community.
“The true measure of a man is what his own people say about him at home,” the governor said, noting that Obiakor’s community had testified to his good character and contributions.
Representing the Chief of Defence Staff, Major General T.E. Gagariga conveyed condolences to the bereaved family and paid tribute to Obiakor’s distinguished service in the Nigerian Armed Forces.
Earlier, the deceased’s son, Nonso Obiakor, described his father as a disciplined officer whose life was defined by international peacekeeping and a commitment to humanity.
Born in 1951, Obiakor died on May 27, 2026. He was remembered for his military service, peacebuilding contributions and enduring connection to Awka, Anambra State.
Soludo, on behalf of the Anambra State Government and its people, extended condolences to the Obiakor family, the Nigerian Armed Forces and others mourning the retired General.
