The Nigerian Environmental Society (NES) has reaffirmed its commitment to environmental protection while actively partnering with stakeholders in environmental planning and implementation.

President of NES, Dr Efegbidiki Okobia, made this known at a press briefing ahead of the 34th National Conference and Annual General Meeting of NES, held in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

He noted that the 40th anniversary of the NES is not just a celebration of longevity but a moment of reflection on achievements, challenges, and renewed commitment to Nigeria and the global south.

“Over the past four decades, NES has played active roles in local, national, regional, and international environmental programs; provided expert opinions on critical national policies, and served as a rallying point for environmental advocacy, policy direction, and multilateral organisations, youth environmental stewardship, and capacity building,” he said.

Dr Okobia called on government authorities to continue engaging with NES as a critical partner in environmental planning and implementation. He also urged the private sector to invest in sustainable practices and support green innovations.

“We call on the general public to embrace environmentally responsible lifestyles and actively participate in conservation and environmental sustainability efforts, and to our young environmentalists and students, we urge you to remain passionate and committed, for the future of our planet lies in your hands,” he explained.

He further highlighted that NES is building stronger relationships with global environmental bodies to foster knowledge and technology transfer, skills acquisition, capacity training, and research.

“NES started small, and today, the environment is a front-burner issue. However, I believe NES is well-structured and positioned to unite all stakeholders and provide a common front for strengthening our environmental institutions,” Dr Okobia.

According to him, NES has grown into the premier environmental professional society in Nigeria, earning its rightful place as the foremost watchdog of the environment.

“From a humble beginning, NES has been likened to the biblical small mustard seed that has grown into a great tree, with vibrant chapters across the nation. We have grown into a vibrant national body with over 35 officially launched chapters across Nigeria, including two chapters each in Lagos and Ogun States, one in each of the other states, the Federal Capital Territory, and one in the United Kingdom,” he said.

Dr. Okobia reiterated that the Society’s mission remains firm.

“Our mission and mandate, as a non-profit, non-governmental, and professional organisation, remain steadfast and committed to environmental protection, the promotion of sustainable development, and the advancement of environmental professionalism within and outside Nigeria,” Dr Okobia.

He also stressed the role of the media in amplifying environmental messages and holding institutions accountable.

The 34th National Conference and 35th Annual General Meeting of NES coincide with a historic milestone: the Society’s 40th anniversary.
