President Bola Tinubu has commiserated with the families of victims, the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), and the United Bank of Africa (UBA) Plc over Tuesday’s fire outbreak at Afriland Building on Broad Street, Lagos Island.

The president, in a statement issued on Thursday by his spokesperson, Mr Bayo Onanuga, extended his condolences to the management and staff of Afriland Properties Limited, the FIRS, and UBA, particularly those who lost loved ones in the inferno and the injured who are currently receiving medical attention.

President Tinubu also commended the emergency responders, including the Federal Fire Service, first aiders, medical personnel, and members of the public, for their quick intervention and noted their deep sense of responsibility during the evacuation.

The president advises more caution, training, and alertness to avert such emergencies in the future.

President Tinubu prays that God Almighty will receive the souls of the departed and grant quick recovery to the injured.

Meanwhile, the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has confirmed that four of its staff members died after a fire tore through Afriland Towers on Broad Street, Marina Lagos, earlier in the week.

United Capital Plc, in another statement, also confirmed the death of six colleagues, stating that the workers were “an integral part of our company and family”.

It said the firm was making arrangements for a memorial and support for bereaved families.

Also affected was the United Bank for Africa (UBA). In a statement, UBA Chairman Tony Elumelu said the bank lost colleagues in the fire, describing the loss as “painful and personal.”

Elumelu said the bank paused “to reflect and remember all who passed” and pledged support for the families of the deceased.

UBA had issued a statement of clarification following widespread reports that the fire occurred at its head office, stating that the building affected housed one of its branches on Broad Street, not its head office, UBA House on Marina.

Afriland Properties Plc, owner of the building, confirmed the fire in a statement and expressed regret over the incident.

It said investigations and damage assessments were still ongoing to ascertain the major cause of the fire.
