The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Senator George Akume says Nigeria’s Independence Day goes beyond a ceremonial date but serves as a moment of reflection on the nation’s journey since 1960.

Senator Akume stated this at a World Press Conference in Abuja while unveiling activities lined up for the country’s 65th Independence Anniversary.

He explained that “the anniversary provides Nigerians with an opportunity to celebrate resilience and renew their commitment to the ideals of unity, peace, and progress for which the nation’s founding fathers fought.”

According to him, Nigeria’s journey has been marked by both triumphs and trials, but the spirit of the people has remained unbroken.

He noted that “despite challenges in governance, the economy, security, and social cohesion, Nigerians have consistently demonstrated the capacity to rise after setbacks, rebuild, and forge ahead with faith in the country’s destiny as a great nation.”

The SGF with the Minister of Information at the briefing on preparations for Nigeria’s 65th anniversary.

In line with this year’s theme, “Nigeria at 65: All Hands on Deck for a Greater Nation,” he said it’s both a reminder and a charge that the responsibility of building a greater Nigeria is not the task of government alone, but a responsibility for every citizen.

The SGF said; “Comprising the youth and elders, men and women, public servants and private entrepreneurs, farmers and professionals, teachers, military and para-military personnel, traders and artisans, as well as Nigerians at home and in the diaspora — all hands must indeed be on deck for us to realize the Nigeria we envision: a nation united in purpose, rich in diversity, and resolute in progress.”

Akume further noted that the Renewed Hope Agenda has become the guiding framework for transforming Nigeria, stressing that “it is an agenda that speaks to national rebirth, inclusivity, and sustainable progress thereby providing hope for the people, especially the youth who represent the future of the nation.”

He said; ” We are all aware of the economic reforms initiated by this administration. They are bold, sometimes difficult, but necessary steps aimed at stabilizing our economy, restoring investor confidence and laying a foundation for long-term growth.”

“Already, we are witnessing positive results. Inflationary pressures are beginning to ease, foreign investment inflows are showing renewed interest, job creation initiatives are expanding opportunities for our youth and social intervention programmes are being strengthened to cushion the effects of reforms on vulnerable groups. These gains, though modest, are a testimony that the Renewed Hope Agenda is on course, and with perseverance, greater dividends will be realised”.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, added that as the engine room of government, his office ensures policy coordination, inter-ministerial synergy, and effective implementation of the President’s priorities.
