Kano Governor Presents N1.37tn 2026 Budget

The Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf has presented a historic N1,368,127,929,271 trillion budget proposal for the 2026 fiscal year, the first trillion-naira budget in the state’s history.

It also reflects the growing trend of expansive subnational spending across Nigeria.

Tagged “Budget of Infrastructure, Inclusive Growth and Sustainable Development,” the proposal represents a major increase of more than N432 billion from the N935.1 billion approved for 2025.

Presenting the estimates before the Kano State House of Assembly, the Governor said; “the budget was designed to consolidate ongoing reforms, complete legacy projects, and accelerate new development priorities in line with national socioeconomic goals.”

According to details contained in the presentation and a statement released by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Tofa “capital expenditure takes the largest share with N934.6 billion, representing 68 percent of the total budget, while recurrent expenditure stands at N433.4 billion or 32 percent.”

Breakdown of the Budget

The Governor explained that “capital projects remain the centrepiece of the spending plan, with N934.6 billion (68%) devoted to development initiatives. Recurrent expenditure accounts for N433.4 billion (32%).”

Education receives the highest sectoral allocation of N405.3 billion (30%), followed by Infrastructure with N346.2 billion (25%), and Health with N212.2 billion (16%). Other priority sectors include; Agriculture, Water Resources, Commerce and Investment, Security, Environment, Tourism, Women and Youth Development, People With Special Needs, and climate-related interventions.

Governor Yusuf said “the spending plan demonstrates the administration’s commitment to human capital development, improved social services, and the physical foundations for sustainable growth.”

He noted that more than 80 percent of the administration’s development blueprint has already been executed, touching nearly every sector of the state’s economy.

He said; “As we approach the final stretch of our four-year mandate, the 2026 Budget represents a covenant with the people—a commitment to consolidate gains and complete key projects.

“This budget is bold but realistic. It reflects our desire to transform Kano into a resilient, inclusive, and prosperous state.”

The Governor commended the Assembly for what he described as robust cooperation since 2023, urging lawmakers to sustain the partnership to ensure effective delivery of the state’s development agenda.

The Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Jibrin Falgore commended the proposals and promised that lawmakers would fast-track the legislative process to ensure timely passage.

With this budget, we are committed to enabling development that benefits the people of Kano and contributes meaningfully to Nigeria’s broader economic advancement,” he said.
