Nigeria’s newest aviation landmark, the Akwa Ibom International Airport in Uyo, has been lauded as a transformative catalyst for the country’s tourism sector.

The airport, recently granted international status by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, is situated adjacent to the state’s domestic terminal. It boasts state-of-the-art aviation technology, five-star lounges, recreational facilities, and modern shopping arcades, making it the first of its kind in Nigeria’s South-South economic zone.

Mr Nkereweum Onung, president of Experience IBOM and chairman of the Board of Trustees of the National Association of Nigerian Tour Operators (NATOP), described the airport as a strategic enabler for Nigeria’s cultural tourism growth. He commended Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, for his visionary leadership in positioning the state as a premier tourism destination.

Onung, also the immediate past president of the Federation of Tourism Associations of Nigeria (FTAN), emphasised that the airport would attract travellers from across the globe, broaden cultural tourism opportunities within the South-South region, generate employment, and stimulate socio-economic and tourism-related trade.

“Governor Umo Eno has demonstrated remarkable professionalism, cultural stewardship, and strategic foresight. His infrastructure initiatives will enhance tourism and hospitality in Akwa Ibom State while serving as sustainable drivers of economic growth and improved security. At Experience IBOM, we are proud to collaborate with the state’s airport management to ensure these facilities are optimally utilised and safeguarded,” Onung said.

He further revealed that Experience IBOM would soon launch marketing campaigns in partnership with local and international stakeholders to promote Akwa Ibom and, by extension, Nigeria on the global tourism map. According to him, strategic infrastructure investments, such as the Akwa Ibom International Airport, are designed to connect populous nations like Nigeria to increased travel, trade, and tourism, ultimately fostering local community development.

Onung also commended Minister Festus Keyamo for his leadership in advancing Nigeria’s position in the global aviation community.
