Kano State Governor, North West Nigeria, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has officially resigned his membership of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), citing prolonged internal crises and the need to act in the overriding interest of the people of Kano State.
The resignation was announced in a statement released on Friday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature.
According to the statement, Governor Yusuf conveyed his decision in a letter addressed to the Chairman of the NNPP, Diso-Chiranchi Ward, Gwale Local Government Area, with the resignation taking effect from Friday, 23 January 2026.
In the letter, the governor expressed appreciation to the NNPP for the opportunity and support accorded to him throughout his political engagement with the party.
“I write with a deep sense of gratitude to formally notify the leadership of the New Nigeria People’s Party of my decision to resign my membership of the party,” the governor stated.
Governor Yusuf acknowledged the support of the party’s leadership and members across Kano State since joining the NNPP in 2022, noting that the goodwill and cooperation he received contributed significantly to his political journey.
He explained that persistent leadership disputes and ongoing legal battles have continued to undermine the stability of the party at both state and national levels.
“In recent times, the party has been confronted with internal challenges arising from leadership disagreements and legal processes, many of which are currently before the courts,” he said.
The governor noted that the situation has widened divisions within the party and weakened internal cohesion.
“The growing disenfranchisement among party members has created deep divisions and cracks within the party structure, generating uncertainty at both the state and national levels,” he added.
Governor Yusuf said his decision followed careful consideration and was guided strictly by public interest concerns.
“After careful reflection, I have come to the conclusion that this decision is in the best interest of the people of Kano State,” he stated, stressing that the move was taken in good faith and without animosity.
The statement further revealed that the governor’s resignation was accompanied by that of 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives, and 44 local government chairmen across the state.
The resignation letter was acknowledged by the NNPP Secretary of Diso-Chiranchi Ward, Kabiru Zubairu, who commended Governor Yusuf’s achievements in infrastructure development, urban renewal, healthcare delivery, education, and economic empowerment.
While admitting the existence of lingering internal challenges within the party, Zubairu said the NNPP had no option but to accept the resignation, describing Governor Yusuf as one of the most outstanding governors produced by the party.
