The Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abuja, has issued a detailed clarification on the circumstances surrounding the death of Ms Ifunanya Lucy Nwagene, who died from neurotoxic complications following a snake bite on January 31, 2026, amid widespread discussions on social media.

In a press statement signed by the Head of Clinical Services, Dr Bioku Muftau, the hospital expressed deep condolences to the bereaved family, describing the incident as a painful loss, and extended sympathy to relatives during the difficult period.

The management explained that upon Ms Nwagene’s arrival at the facility, medical personnel acted promptly, administering emergency care that included resuscitation efforts, intravenous fluids, intranasal oxygen, and polyvalent anti-snake venom, in line with standard medical protocols.

According to the statement, clinical assessment revealed that the patient had already developed severe neurotoxic complications from the snake bite, a condition that required urgent intensive care management.

“Arrangements were immediately made to transfer her to the Intensive Care Unit for further treatment”.

However, the hospital disclosed that the patient’s condition deteriorated suddenly just before the transfer could be completed, prompting the medical team to initiate cardiopulmonary resuscitation and other life-saving measures in an attempt to stabilise her.

“FMC Abuja rejected claims of non-availability of anti-snake venom and allegations of inadequate response”, describing them as unfounded, and reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, professionalism, and quality patient care, while urging the public to seek information from credible sources rather than unverified social media reports.
