The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has declared the All Progressives Congress (APC) a dominant political force, citing massive nationwide participation at its National Convention and affirming confidence in the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Addressing delegates, Akpabio said: “I want to say that I am very impressed with what the turnout has been. All the States of the Federation and the FCT are here represented. All our members in the diaspora are glued to the television today. APC is showing the way.”
He asserted the party’s standing in the political landscape, stating, “There are now only two political parties in Nigeria, APC and others.”
The Senate President described the convention as a milestone under the current administration. “Mr President, since you came on board as President, this is your first major convention. The last one was when you became the candidate of our great party,” he said.
Reflecting on the President’s political trajectory, Akpabio stated: “From one state in the southwest called Lagos State, you brought out the torch; you beamed it to Nigeria, and the country adopted and approved.”
He also paid tribute to party stalwarts, including Bisi Akande, Segun Osoba and the late Muhammadu Buhari, noting their contributions to the party’s growth.
Highlighting reforms, Akpabio said, “From the time you removed the fuel subsidy up to the time you harmonised the idea of multiple exchange rates… you brought the poor person in the village to now have the opportunity of getting a loan to have tertiary education.”
On infrastructure, he added: “Now people can travel from Lagos all the way to Ibadan… as I speak now, I took a ride through the coastal road that we contemplated 50 years ago.”
Quoting a Helen Keller anecdote, he said, “To have sight and no vision,”, adding that the President “has sight and you also have vision.”
He assured legislative backing for reforms, stating: “Be assured of our continual support and cooperation.”
Akpabio concluded with optimism, praying for “peace to the APC family” and expressing confidence in “victory in 2027 and beyond”.
