The Archbishop of the Ecclesiastical Province of the Niger and Bishop of Awka Anglican Diocese, Most Reverend Alexander Ibezim, has said that the marks borne by Jesus Christ on the cross symbolise integrity, faithfulness, sacrifice, endurance, and love, urging Christians worldwide to reflect these virtues in their daily lives.

Good Friday, observed by Christians across the world, commemorates the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ at Calvary. It is regarded as one of the most solemn days in the Christian calendar, marked by reflection, prayer, and remembrance of Christ’s sacrifice for humanity’s redemption.

Speaking during a special Good Friday service at Saint Michael and All Angels Church in Nawfia, Anambra State, southeastern Nigeria, Archbishop Ibezim stressed that the solemnity of the day should not be treated as routine, but embraced as an opportunity for deeper spiritual reflection and renewed commitment to Christ.

The service featured the traditional recounting of the Seven Last Words of Jesus Christ and drew worshippers commemorating the crucifixion. The Archbishop noted that Good Friday serves as a reminder of life’s trials, temptations, and struggles, drawing parallels with the suffering endured by Jesus.

Addressing the theme, “For I bear in my body the marks of Jesus Christ,” Ibezim said Christians must embody Christ-like virtues in all aspects of their lives. He emphasised that these “marks” should not be viewed as a burden, but embraced as the defining identity of true believers.

He also expressed concern over what he described as superficial expressions of faith, noting that some attend church for appearances or social validation, while others remain deeply committed and spiritually vigilant. He urged worshippers to pursue righteousness and prioritise the kingdom of God.

The Archbishop calls on Christians to demonstrate love, compassion, and courage, support one another, uphold truth and justice, lead by example, and remain steadfast in their vows.
