Kano State Police Command Busts Cattle Rustling Gang

Salihu Ali, Kano

The Nigeria Police Force in Kano State, in collaboration with the Military Joint Task Force (JTF), have recovered 67 cows and other livestock stolen by suspected cattle rustlers in Gwarzo Local Government Area of the state.

According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Kiyawa, the operation followed credible intelligence received on May 6, 2026, indicating that armed cattle rustlers had attacked villages around Gwarzo and nearby communities, making away with several livestock.

Police said a combined team of operatives from the Gwarzo Division and Military JTF personnel stationed along the Kano-Katsina border swiftly mobilised to the affected areas.

“On sighting the security operatives, the suspects reportedly engaged the team in a gun duel,” Kiyawa revealed.

However, the joint security team overpowered the rustlers with superior tactical strength, forcing them to abandon the stolen animals and flee out of the state.

Items recovered during the operation included 67 cows, one donkey, and one sheep.

However, the recovered livestock were taken into custody at the Gwarzo Police Division and later handed over to their rightful owners on May 7 after proper identification and verification conducted through district heads under the supervision of the local government authorities.

The police said efforts are ongoing to track down and arrest the fleeing suspects, while surveillance and intelligence operations have been intensified in the affected communities to prevent further attacks.

The Commissioner of Police CP Ibrahim Bakori, commended the professionalism and bravery of the operatives and the collaboration with the Military JTF in combating rural crime.

He reassured residents of the command’s commitment to protecting lives, property, and the agricultural economy of the state, while urging members of the public to continue providing timely and credible information to security agencies.
