AMTRIGG and Alhusna polo teams emerged champions in a commemorative polo exhibition match, in honour of the former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral AZ Gambo, at the Guards Polo Club in Abuja, Nigeria.
The exhibition in honour of Vice Admiral AZ Gambo’s 60th birthday anniversary, saw Alhusna defeat Kangal 2-0 in the medium goal category, while AMTRIGG beat AZ Polo Team 6-3 in the high-goal event.
The event, organised as part of activities marking the celebration of Former Vice Admiral Gambo, attracted senior military and sports enthusiasts from across Nigeria.
Vice Admiral Gambo used the occasion to restate his commitment to the development of polo within the Nigerian military, describing the sport as a global industry capable of driving tourism, investment and international relations.

He highlighted his role in establishing the Nigerian Navy Polo Association during his tenure, stressing that Polo has deep historical ties with the Nigerian Navy and Nigeria’s equestrian traditions.
BEYOND SPORTS
Also speaking during the event, former Chief of Defence Staff, General Luky Irabor, described Gambo as a longtime colleague and friend, noting their shared history at the Nigerian Defence Academy. He said the event not only a celebration of sports, but also of enduring military camaraderie.
The Director General of Voice of Nigeria (VON), Jibrin Baba Ndace, commended the organisers for promoting polo as a tool for national unity, cultural exchange and international visibility.

He emphasised the importance of media institutions in highlighting sporting events that contribute to national development and youth engagement.
The tournament further showcased growing interest in polo within Nigeria’s sporting and military communities, with organisers, sponsors and guest applauding the success of the event.

Stakeholders at the venue called for continued investment in polo infrastructure, youth participation and international collaborations to strengthen Nigeria’s presence in global equestrian sports.
The matches and celebration collectively added colour to a memorable day at the Guards Polo Club Abuja, reinforcing polo’s rising profile as both a sports and a cultural asset in Nigeria.
