South African Weather Service Warns of Flooding in Western Cape

South African weather experts have warned of disruptive rainfall across parts of the Western Cape province that could trigger flooding and increase the risk of mudslides.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued an Orange Level 8 alert for severe conditions in Western Cape.

The warning covers mountainous areas of Drakenstein, Stellenbosch, the western Theewaterskloof, the City of Cape Town, Breede Valley and Witzenberg where heavy downpours may lead to flooded roads and bridges, damage to homes and danger to life from fast‑flowing rivers.

SAWS said” the system is expected to bring widespread disruption, with an additional Orange Level 6 warning issued for the southern West Coast and western Overberg districts where flooding of low‑lying areas remains likely”.

The service also cautioned of damaging winds and waves along the coastline between Lambert’s Bay and Cannon Rocks, posing risks to navigation and coastal infrastructure.

The latest alerts follow a series of winter weather warnings issued by SAWS in recent weeks as cold fronts continue to sweep across the province.

Authorities have urged residents in high‑risk areas to exercise caution, avoid flooded roads and prepare for possible evacuations should conditions worsen.
