Niger’s military authorities on Saturday said they were “gradually regaining control” after mutineers reportedly held soldiers hostage at a military base near the capital, Niamey, and fired shots.
In a statement read on state television and signed by Defence Minister General Salifou Mody, the authorities urged residents to remain calm and continue with their normal activities.
Security sources told reporters that “insurgents from within the armed forces” attempted to enter the presidential palace in Niamey but were repelled by the presidential guard. Shooting was reportedly still ongoing around the palace.
Residents reported hearing heavy gunfire overnight in several parts of the capital, particularly near the presidential palace and the airport, which houses a major military base.
State television was off air for more than an hour before resuming broadcasts at about 10 a.m. local time.
The situation remains fluid, with security forces working to restore full control in the affected areas.
