Navy 70th Anniversary: Commander Seeks Oba of Lagos Support

The Commander of Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT, Commodore Aiwuyor Adams-Aliu, has paid a courtesy visit to the Oba of Lagos, His Royal Majesty Alaiyeluwa Oba Rilwanu Babatunde Osuolale Aremu Akiolu.

This is part of preparations for the forthcoming 70th Anniversary celebration of the Nigerian Navy.

The visit was aimed at formally inviting the revered monarch to participate in activities lined up for the landmark anniversary celebration scheduled to hold from 29 May to 4 June 2026.

Speaking during the visit, Commodore Adams-Aliu described the anniversary as a major milestone in the history of the Nigerian Navy, reflecting seven decades of dedication to maritime security, national defence and regional stability.

He said that “the Nigerian Navy has remained steadfast in protecting Nigeria’s territorial waters and supporting national development through sustained maritime operations and strategic engagements.”

The NNS BEECROFT Commander stressed the importance of strengthening collaboration between the Navy and traditional institutions, especially within coastal communities where maritime activities contribute significantly to economic growth and security.

According to him, the support and cooperation of traditional rulers remain vital in promoting peace, security and stronger civil-military relations within the maritime domain.

Commodore Adams-Aliu also highlighted the Navy’s commitment to community engagement and maintaining cordial relationships with stakeholders across the country.

Responding, the Oba of Lagos commended the Nigerian Navy for its unwavering commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s maritime environment and ensuring safety along the nation’s waterways.

Enhancing Maritime Security

Oba Akiolu expressed appreciation for the visit and reaffirmed his support for the Nigerian Navy and its initiatives aimed at enhancing maritime security and national unity.

The monarch further acknowledged the critical role of the Navy in sustaining peace and stability within coastal communities and across the Gulf of Guinea region.

The forthcoming Nigerian Navy 70th Anniversary celebration will feature a series of activities including ceremonial parades, an International Fleet Review at the Eko Atlantic waterfront, community outreach programmes and exhibitions showcasing the Navy’s operational achievements and historical legacy since its establishment.
