Gombe Police Promise Adequate Security for Party Primaries

By Rebecca Mu’azu, Gombe

The Gombe State Police Command has given assurances to political stakeholders and residents of the state of robust security arrangements ahead of the 2026 party primary elections across the state.

Police Commissioner, CP Umar Ahmed Chuso, gave the assurances during the signing of a Peace Accord by aspirants in Gombe, witnessed by heads of other security agencies.

Speaking on behalf of CP Chuso, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in Gombe State, Mr Mohammed Bashir Mustafa reaffirmed the commitment of law enforcement agencies to safeguarding Nigeria’s democratic process during the primaries.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police noted that participation in party primary elections remained a fundamental democratic right, protected under the 1999 Constitution, as amended, as well as relevant provisions of the Electoral Act 2026 and regulations issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

According to him, the Police Command, in collaboration with other security agencies, will deploy adequate personnel and resources to secure all venues designated for the conduct of party primaries across Gombe State.

He warned political actors and their supporters against acts capable of disrupting the electoral process, including violence, intimidation, deployment of political thugs and the unlawful movement of armed groups such as hunters carrying dangerous weapons, including cutlasses, knives and other offensive items.

DCP Mustafa stressed that such offences contravened relevant sections of the Electoral Act and attracted criminal sanctions, including imprisonment.

He further urged politicians to comply strictly with electoral guidelines and party constitutions, while resolving disputes through lawful channels such as internal party mechanisms or the courts, rather than resorting to self-help or acts capable of breaching public peace.

DCP Mustafa reiterated that security agencies in Gombe State remained resolute in maintaining law and order throughout the primaries, warning that any breach of peace would be met with decisive enforcement of the law.

Mustafa called on all stakeholders to work together to ensure peaceful and credible party primaries that would strengthen Nigeria’s democracy.

After signing the Peace Accord, all the aspirants promised to abide by the set rules and regulations.
