President Putin’s China Visit Targets Trade, Global Cooperation

Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to begin a two-day visit to China on Tuesday, where he will meet with Chinese leader Xi Jinping for talks centred on strengthening bilateral relations and addressing major global issues.

According to the Kremlin, Putin will travel with a delegation that includes ministers, senior officials, business executives, central bank governor Elvira Nabiullina, and leaders of key energy firms such as Gazprom and Rosneft.

Western sanctions imposed over Russia’s war in Ukraine have pushed many Russian oligarchs to depend more heavily on China for trade and economic cooperation.

The visit comes shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump wrapped up a major state visit to China.

Although Putin is expected to receive updates from Xi regarding those discussions, Kremlin officials stressed that the trip had already been arranged and was not organised in reaction to Trump’s visit. Formal talks between Putin and Xi are scheduled for Wednesday and will focus on deepening what both nations describe as a privileged strategic partnership, alongside discussions on regional and international matters.

The Kremlin said the two leaders are expected to sign a joint declaration along with several bilateral agreements.

Putin’s foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov stated that about 40 documents may be signed, covering sectors such as industry, trade, transport, and construction. He added that one of the agreements will include a statement on creating a multipolar world order and promoting a new model of international relations.

An informal session between the two leaders is also expected, including a private tea ceremony where discussions may cover the conflicts involving Iran and Ukraine, Ushakov said.
