The Wife of the Governor of Anambra State, Nonye Soludo, has urged Nigerians to promote unity and safeguard the nation’s rich cultural heritage as the world commemorates the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, observed annually on May 21.
In a statement issued to commemorate the global observance, the Anambra State First Lady emphasized the importance of cultural diversity as a tool for peace, dialogue, national development, and social harmony.
Speaking of the significance of this year’s celebration themed, “Culture Connects Us All,” she noted that culture remains a powerful force that binds people together beyond ethnic, religious, and regional differences.

Anambra First Lady Calls for Global Humanitarian Support
According to her, Nigeria’s strength lies in its rich diversity, adding that every ethnic group in the country possesses unique traditions, languages, values, and histories that should be preserved and proudly projected to the world.
The First Lady urged Nigerians to promote peaceful coexistence and mutual respect among different cultural groups, stressing that unity in diversity remains essential for national growth and sustainable development.
She also called on parents and guardians to deliberately teach their children their indigenous languages, traditions, moral values, and historical heritage, warning that many cultural identities are gradually fading due to neglect and excessive foreign influence.
“The family remains the first institution of cultural education. Parents must take responsibility for teaching their children their culture, history, and values so that future generations will remain connected to their roots,” she stated.
She encouraged young Nigerians to take pride in their cultural identity and confidently showcase Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage on the global stage through fashion, music, art, language, cuisine, and traditional practices.
Cultural Diversity
The Anambra First Lady further highlighted the need for continuous dialogue among cultures as a pathway to peace, understanding, and national unity, adding that cultural diversity should never be a source of division but a foundation for collective progress.
She reaffirmed her commitment to initiatives that promote cultural preservation, youth orientation, and community development across Anambra State and Nigeria at large.
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, UNESCO, established the observance to promote intercultural dialogue and the protection of cultural diversity worldwide.
