Nigerian Pharmacists Earn Global Research Recognition

By Edward Samuel, Abuja

Nigeria’s pharmaceutical research community has gained fresh international recognition following the acceptance of two research abstracts from the Community Pharmacists Assessment and Career Progression Institute (CPACPI) for presentation at the 84th International Pharmaceutical Federation World Congress of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences scheduled to hold in Montreal, Canada, from August 30 to September 2, 2026.

The development is being celebrated within the pharmaceutical sector as another major milestone capable of strengthening the global visibility of Nigerian community pharmacy practice through evidence-based research, workforce development, and structured professional advancement initiatives.

The accepted studies focus on career progression, competency development, and the evolving realities of community pharmacy practice in Nigeria.

One of the studies, titled “The Implementation Gap: Perceived Barriers and External Threats to Community Pharmacists’ Participation in a Career Advancement Scheme in Nigeria,” will be presented by Iyeseun Asieba, Chairperson of the CPACPI Board.

The research examines systemic barriers, institutional limitations, regulatory concerns, and external pressures affecting the participation of Nigerian community pharmacists in structured career advancement programmes.

Speaking on the development, Dr. Asieba described the acceptance as deeply rewarding, noting that the recognition demonstrates that the challenges and innovative solutions emerging from Nigerian pharmacy practice possess global relevance.

“This recognition validates the ingenuity, resilience, and research capacity of Nigerian pharmacists,” she explained.

“It shows that locally generated evidence and professional initiatives from Nigeria can contribute meaningfully to global healthcare conversations.”

The second accepted study, titled “Beyond the Counter: Profiling the Early Adopters of a Career Progression Framework among Nigerian Community Pharmacists,” will be presented by Omokhafe Mary Ashore.

The study investigates the motivations, professional characteristics, and behavioural patterns of pharmacists who embraced the CPACPI framework during its early implementation phase, while also providing insights into the changing structure of community pharmacy practice in Nigeria.

Reacting to the international recognition, Pharm. Ashore described the development as both inspiring and encouraging.

“This achievement demonstrates how localized healthcare research and community-based professional initiatives can shape global healthcare discussions and influence policy directions,” she emphasised.

The abstracts were supervised by the Research and Publications Subcommittee under the leadership of Chukwuemeka Ubaka.

Also reacting to the breakthrough, Ambrose Igwekamma Ezeh, National Chairman of the Association of Community Pharmacists of Nigeria, expressed satisfaction over the growing international recognition of Nigerian pharmaceutical practice.

According to him, the CPACPI framework aligns strategically with global healthcare transformation efforts aimed at strengthening competencies, improving professional pathways, and institutionalizing structured career progression among community pharmacists.

“Building resilient and patient-centered healthcare systems requires continuous competency development and strong professional structures,” Ezeh said.

“We believe this international exposure will encourage broader institutional support and wider adoption of the standardized career progression framework across Nigeria’s healthcare ecosystem.”

He further emphasised that eliminating professional complacency and promoting continuous professional development among pharmacists remain essential to improving patient outcomes and strengthening pharmaceutical care services nationwide.

Stakeholders within the profession say the acceptance of the two abstracts further reinforces Nigeria’s growing contribution to pharmaceutical innovation, workforce development, and evidence-based healthcare reforms within the global pharmacy community.

They also noted that the recognition reflects the increasing global relevance of Nigerian-led professional initiatives and highlights the country’s expanding role in shaping conversations around healthcare delivery, pharmaceutical education, and sustainable workforce development.
