Sallah: Railway Corporation Increases Lagos-Ibadan Operations

The Nigerian Railway Corporation, NRC, says there will be a temporary increase in train operations on the Lagos-Ibadan standard gauge corridor ahead of the Sallah celebration.

The temporary adjustment is aimed at easing passenger movement and meeting the anticipated surge in travel demand during the Sallah holidays.

This came as thousands of travellers are expected to journey to different parts of the country for the festive period.

In a statement signed by the NRC Chief Public Relations Officer, Mr Callistus Unyimadu, said that six train trips would operate on the Lagos-Ibadan Train Service corridor on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, instead of the usual four trips.

Under the revised arrangement, train departures from Lagos will take place at 7:45am, 1:40pm and 4:00pm, while departures from Ibadan are scheduled for 8:00am, 10:50am and 4:30pm.

“The additional services are only for the Sallah travel period and that normal Tuesday operations will revert to four trips immediately after the celebrations” the statement read.

The corporation also announced a temporary adjustment to its recently introduced Thursday six-trip operations on the route.

“Only  four trips would be operated on Thursday, May 28, 2026, during the review period, after which the regular six-trip Thursday schedule would resume the following week”.It stated

The Lagos-Ibadan standard gauge rail corridor has become one of Nigeria’s busiest passenger rail routes since its inauguration, providing an alternative to road travel between Lagos and Ibadan.

The service has gained popularity among commuters and holiday travellers because of its relative affordability, safety and reduced travel time.

Meanwhile, the Osun State Government is set to operate its annual free Sallah train service for indigenes travelling from Lagos to Osogbo for the festivities.

The special service will run on the NRC narrow gauge corridor, with departure scheduled from Iddo Station in Lagos on Tuesday, May 26, while the return trip from Osogbo to Lagos will take place on Thursday, May 28.

Rail transportation has continued to witness renewed patronage in Nigeria amid rising road transportation costs and security concerns on some highways, with the Federal Government intensifying efforts to revitalise railway infrastructure nationwide.

The NRC reassured passengers of its commitment to safe, efficient and reliable rail transport services across the country and wished Nigerians a peaceful and memorable Sallah celebration.
