The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Nasarawa State has affirmed former governorship flag bearer, Dr. David Emmanuel Ombugadu, as its consensus governorship candidate for the 2027 general elections.
The primary election, held in Lafia amidst high spirits and a massive turnout of party stalwarts in Lafia, also saw the immediate announcement of Dr Yahaya Ohinoyi as his running mate for the 2027 gubernatorial ticket.
Addressing the crowd, the PDP National Officer deployed to conduct the exercise, Abdulmaleek Danga, clarified that the gathering was a formal fulfilment of party protocol, as the foundational mobilisations had already been solidified by leadership at the local government’s level.
”This is not a campaign programme; this is a primary election to elect our gubernatorial candidate on the platform of the PDP for Nasarawa State. But the work has been done by youth leaders and the party supporters from the various local governments. We only have one contestant for the position of Governor”, Danga announced.
Following the affirmation of party members that unanimously approved the candidate as the flagbearer, Danga declared Ombugadu duly affirmed, citing the authority vested in him by the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party.
In his acceptance speech, Dr Ombugadu expressed deep appreciation to the party faithful for transforming his status from an aspirant into a confirmed candidate.
He specifically commended seven sitting members of the State House of Assembly who have remained steadfast with the opposition party.
”In the whole country, they are standing strong, representing this party as State Assembly members. I want to sincerely thank all of you,” Ombugadu said.
The newly affirmed candidate noted that his acceptance followed extensive consultations with key national and state party organs, explicitly naming national stakeholders and state working committee members as pillars of support who cleared the path for a single, focused agenda.
“We are going straight to work. We don’t have time because some people here have worn black clothes for the past three years, they are not tired, and they said we will go with you. We are not going to give up until we take you to Government House”, he said.
Dr Ombugadu therefore, unveiled Dr Yahaya Ohinoyi as his deputy governorship candidate for the 2027 race.
For his part, the newly unveiled running mate, Dr Ohinoyi, charged the party structure to learn from the outcomes of the 2019 and 2023 electoral cycles to protect their votes in the forthcoming election.
”You are not fools now. If you are not fools now, what happened in the past will not happen again. The Government House is ours”, Ohinoyi declared.
He urged elders, women, and youth leaders to return to their various voting units immediately, stating that a robust grassroots network is what will ensure victory at the polls.
