The Nigerian Navy Unveils Navy Reference Hospital in Abuja

By Martha Obi, Abuja

The Nigerian Navy has recorded another significant milestone in its deliberate efforts to improve personnel welfare, strengthen institutional capacity and enhance operational effectiveness with the groundbreaking ceremony for the Nigerian Navy Reference Hospital, Asokoro, and the commissioning of several projects in Abuja.

The Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, stated this during the groundbreaking and project commissioning ceremony held at Naval Base Abuja, describing the hospital project as one of the first major infrastructure initiatives under his leadership and one that holds special significance.

Vice Admiral Abbas said, The welfare of naval personnel extends beyond accommodation and working conditions to the quality of healthcare available to them and their families,” noting that the new medical facility is expected to address that critical need.

According to him, the 200-bed Nigerian Navy Reference Hospital is envisioned as a state-of-the-art healthcare facility equipped with modern diagnostic, treatment and specialist care capabilities capable of handling serious medical conditions that often compel Nigerians to seek treatment abroad.

He explained that beyond serving naval personnel and their dependents, the hospital would contribute significantly to healthcare delivery within the Federal Capital Territory and neighbouring communities, thereby reducing dependence on medical tourism and strengthening local healthcare services.

The Naval Chief noted that the accompanying tree-planting exercise symbolised the Nigerian Navy’s commitment to environmental sustainability and the creation of a healthier and more conducive environment for future generations.

Vice Admiral Abbas said theNavy was not only breaking ground for a landmark healthcare project but also celebrating the completion of several critical infrastructure projects aimed at improving personnel welfare, productivity and operational effectiveness across naval formations in Abuja.”

The projects commissioned include eight blocks of 16 two-bedroom accommodation units at Navy Quarters Galadimawa, a 48-unit single-room accommodation block for junior ratings at Navy Town Asokoro, the electrification of 10 accommodation blocks, a new water reticulation system and other associated infrastructure.

Earlier, the Naval Chief commissioned the completed Junior Officers’ Quarters at Galadimawa, which he said would provide improved accommodation for young officers and boost morale.

He particularly highlighted the completion of the 48-unit accommodation project in Asokoro, abandoned for over five years, as evidence of the Navy leadership’s resolve to revive stalled projects and prevent waste of public investment.

He assured personnel that more abandoned projects across the Service would soon be completed and commissioned, adding that ongoing infrastructure development within Navy Town Asokoro, including road network improvements and electrification projects, demonstrates the Navy’s commitment to ensuring that personnel directly benefit from development initiatives.

While celebrating the achievements, Vice Admiral Abbas stressed that infrastructure development does not end with project completion, urging beneficiaries and custodians of the facilities to embrace a strong maintenance culture, take ownership of the projects and adopt prudent electricity consumption habits to prevent waste of resources.
