The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has announced plans to intensify enforcement against illegal street car racing in Abuja, citing growing concerns over public safety in residential neighbourhoods.
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mr Nyesom Wike, disclosed this while speaking with journalists during an inspection of ongoing infrastructure projects in the nation’s capital on Monday.
He said that although the expanding road network has improved movement across the FCT, some motorists have begun using the roads for reckless driving and unauthorised racing, putting other road users and residents at risk.
According to the Minister, the administration is committed to ensuring that public infrastructure is used responsibly and safely.
“They are trying to show how beautiful the roads are, but they forget there are aspects of it that also pose danger to innocent citizens. I appeal to them to understand that their rights have limitations, and life is more important,” he said.
Wike said the administration had not yet received formal complaints identifying specific locations where the activities occur but assured residents that the matter would receive immediate attention once reports are verified.
He said the FCT Traffic Management Department would be directed to strengthen enforcement, increase patrols and prevent illegal racing on roads within residential communities.
The Minister emphasised that organised motor racing should only take place at approved venues designed for such activities and not on public roads.
“Rest assured that we will do everything possible to ensure that we do not allow car racing within residential areas,” he said.
The FCTA said it would continue to monitor compliance with traffic regulations as part of broader efforts to improve road safety and protect lives and property across the Federal Capital Territory.
