Nigeria’s Maritime Future: Defence Minister Reaffirms Navy’s Role

The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (Rtd), OFR, has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to equipping the Nigerian Navy with the capabilities required to strengthen maritime security, protect national interests and support the growth of Nigeria’s blue economy.

General Musa made the commitment during the Nigerian Navy’s 70th Anniversary Ceremonial Sunset Dinner and Awards Night in Lagos, where the service concluded activities marking seven decades of maritime operations and national service.

The Minister noted that the changing nature of maritime threats requires a Navy capable of integrating modern technology, intelligence systems, surveillance platforms and operational innovation to safeguard Nigeria’s maritime domain.

He emphasised that securing Nigeria’s waters remains central to protecting economic assets, supporting trade routes and ensuring the safety of critical maritime infrastructure.

The Defence Minister recognised the Nigerian Navy’s contributions to combating piracy, crude oil theft, illegal fishing and other maritime crimes affecting national security and economic stability.

He commended officers, ratings and civilian personnel of the Nigerian Navy for their professionalism, discipline and dedication over the past seven decades, while honouring personnel whose sacrifices have strengthened the traditions of the Service.

The anniversary activities highlighted the strategic connection between maritime security, national development and regional stability, reinforcing the importance of a modern naval force capable of responding to emerging security challenges.

The Ministry of Defence reaffirmed that continued investment in naval capability, innovation and cooperation remains essential to securing Nigeria’s maritime future.
