The Nigerian government has intensified efforts to evacuate its nationals in South Africa, who have indicated interest in returning home, with the screening exercise extended to June 10, 2026.
According to the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Kimiebi Ebienfa, the Nigerian Mission in Pretoria, confirmed that the verification and screening process for prospective evacuees will continue until Wednesday, June 10, to accommodate more applicants.
Mr. Ebienfa disclosed that more than 500 Nigerians have so far been screened and cleared for evacuation under the exercise coordinated by the Nigerian government through its diplomatic mission in South Africa.

He further revealed that President Bola Tinubu has approved five evacuation flights to facilitate the return of affected Nigerians. The flights will be operated by Air Peace, one of Nigeria’s leading airlines.
The first evacuation flight is expected to depart Johannesburg on Monday evening, subject to the receipt of all necessary permits and operational clearances for the aircraft.
The flight is projected to airlift about 270 passengers on its maiden trip back to Nigeria.
The Ministry stated that details regarding the departure schedule and estimated arrival time in Lagos will be communicated once updates are received from the Nigerian High Commission in South Africa.
The evacuation initiative underscores the Nigerian government’s commitment to the welfare and protection of Nigerian citizens abroad while ensuring a smooth and orderly return process for those seeking to come back home.
