The Rivers State Police Command South-South Nigeria, has launched a comprehensive investigation into allegations of unlawful detention and related misconduct published on an online platform.
It reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, accountability, and the protection of fundamental human rights.
In a statement issued by the Command, the Commissioner of Police, Rivers State Command, CP Olugbenga Adepoju disclosed that he has directed the Command’s investigative panel to conduct a thorough examination of the incident and establish the facts surrounding the allegations.
The move, according to the Commissioner, “underscores the Command’s determination to ensure transparency in its operations and maintain public confidence in law enforcement activities across the state.”
As part of the ongoing investigation, the Police Command has called on individuals directly affected by the alleged incident, as well as members of the public with credible and relevant information, to come forward and assist the investigative panel.
The Command emphasised that public cooperation would be vital in ensuring a fair, impartial, and fact-based outcome.
The Affected persons have been advised to visit the Office of the Police Public Relations Officer at the Rivers State Police Command Headquarters or contact the Complaint Response Unit (CRU) through the dedicated telephone lines provided by the Command.
CP Adepoju reiterated that “detention beyond the legally prescribed period without due process remains unlawful and constitutes a violation of citizens’ rights.”
He stressed that such conduct is unacceptable and will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
The Commissioner further warned that any police officer found culpable of unethical conduct, abuse of office, or unlawful practices would face strict disciplinary action in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Nigeria Police Act, and other applicable regulations governing police conduct.
He assured residents that the Command remains committed to promoting accountability, transparency, respect for human dignity, and people-friendly policing.
According to him, “these principles align with the directives of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu, aimed at strengthening public trust and enhancing the protection of citizens’ rights and freedoms.”
The Rivers State Police Command reaffirmed its resolve to uphold justice, safeguard the rights of all persons, and ensure that policing in the state is carried out with fairness, integrity, and respect for the rule of law.
