The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) Nigeria Hub has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting sustainable construction practices and climate-resilient infrastructure as key drivers of environmental sustainability, economic growth and national security.
The commitment was made in a statement issued by the Group Head of CIOB Nigeria Hub, Onabekun Adekunle, to mark World Environment Day 2026, celebrated globally under the theme “Climate Action”, with the campaign slogan, “Inspired by Nature”. For Climate. For Our Future.
According to the Institute, World Environment Day serves as a timely reminder of the critical role the built environment plays in tackling climate change and advancing sustainable development.
The statement noted that as Nigeria continues to pursue ambitious infrastructural development programmes, environmental considerations must remain central to planning, design, construction and maintenance processes.
CIOB stressed that the relationship between infrastructure, environmental sustainability and security cannot be overstated, warning that unregulated urbanisation, environmental degradation and poorly planned developments often contribute to resource scarcity, displacement of communities and socio-economic tensions capable of fuelling insecurity.
The Institute expressed concern over the growing impact of environmental challenges such as desertification, flooding, erosion and pollution, which continue to threaten livelihoods across the country.
It observed that the loss of productive land and economic opportunities has, in many cases, exacerbated conflicts and increased the vulnerability of affected communities.
However, CIOB maintained that when strategically planned and sustainably implemented, infrastructure development can serve as a catalyst for stability, prosperity and national cohesion.
The statement highlighted that well-designed transportation systems, climate-resilient settlements, efficient public utilities and sustainable urban developments help strengthen economic activities, create jobs, improve quality of life and support effective security operations.
The Institute called for the enforcement of forward-looking building codes, green policies and environmentally responsible urban regulations to provide a framework for sustainable development.
It also urged stakeholders in the built environment to ensure that progress does not come at the expense of the planet by reducing carbon footprints, minimising construction waste, promoting sustainable building materials, enhancing energy efficiency and creating smarter, safer and more sustainable communities.
CIOB further encouraged the integration of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles into infrastructure planning and project delivery, while supporting the adoption of innovative construction technologies, environmentally friendly materials and circular economy initiatives that convert waste into valuable building resources.
The Institute also advocated stronger enforcement of environmental regulations, including Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs), to ensure that development projects align with national and global sustainability goals while protecting communities and ecosystems.

Describing climate action as more than an environmental obligation, CIOB said sustainable infrastructure development represents a strategic investment in Nigeria’s future, with the potential to reduce vulnerabilities, strengthen resilience, create economic opportunities and contribute significantly to a more secure and prosperous nation.
The Institute also extended its sympathy to the families, school authorities and government agencies involved in efforts to secure the safe return of students reportedly kidnapped in Oyo State, expressing hope for their swift and safe reunion with their families and communities.
CIOB Nigeria Hub called on Nigerians to renew their collective commitment to building a future where infrastructure development, environmental stewardship and national security work together to deliver lasting prosperity for all.
