The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has inaugurated its Service Innovation Committee to strengthen research and development, drive digital transformation, and enhance service delivery across the Agency.

The inauguration, held at NiMet headquarters in Abuja, is in line with the Nigerian Government’s public service reform agenda and the directive of the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation aimed at promoting innovation in public institutions.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, Charles Anosike, described innovation as ‘a key pillar of the Agency’s administration.’

He said; “innovation in a scientific institution involves translating research findings, scientific discoveries, and inventions into practical solutions that create value and improve service delivery.”

Professor Anosike highlighted several transformative initiatives undertaken by the Agency since he assumed office. These include; the modernisation of operational systems, improvements in weather and climate services, enhanced stakeholder engagement, strengthened staff capacity, expanded partnerships, and the deployment of digital technologies to improve efficiency and support informed decision-making.

According to him, the initiatives have significantly improved organisational performance while creating an environment that encourages creativity and innovation.

The establishment of this Committee formalizes our commitment to innovation and continuous improvement,” he said.

The Director-General explained that the Committee would serve as a catalyst for scientific advancement by identifying and promoting climate-smart innovations, supporting research and development activities, and providing evidence-based recommendations to help achieve the Agency’s strategic objectives.

He added that “the Committee would also advise management on innovation-related issues and monitor the implementation and progress of innovation initiatives across the Agency.”

The inauguration of the Service Innovation Committee reflects NiMet’s commitment to promoting excellence, professionalism, and innovation, while strengthening the Agency’s capacity to respond to evolving technological, environmental, and stakeholder needs.
