The Lagos State Waterways Authority, in partnership with private ferry operator InterFerry, has commenced the practical phase of its Ferry Safety Development Programme aimed at improving safety standards and technical capacity in Nigeria’s inland waterways sector.
The first training session held in Lagos attracted more than 50 participants for intensive hands-on training and industry engagement sessions.
Speaking on the programme, Training Coordinator Mr Ukeme Sunday said the session focused on key areas including ferry design, vessel construction, safety standards, maintenance procedures, and operational best practices.
He said the training was designed to improve safety and operational efficiency across the ferry transportation value chain.
The Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on the Blue Economy, Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, said the practical component of the programme complements its virtual mentoring and self-paced learning modules.
He noted that the initiative aligns with the Lagos State Government’s commitment to strengthening maritime safety, promoting capacity development and advancing its blue economy agenda.
Emmanuel also commended the partnership between LASWA and Caverton Marine Services in sponsoring the programme, describing both organisations as key stakeholders in efforts to improve safety standards within the ferry transport sector.
A major highlight of the training was the technical session led by the General Manager of Caverton Marine Services, Mr. Mohammed Ibrahim, who drew on more than 40 years of experience to provide participants with practical insights into vessel construction, maintenance, regulatory compliance, and safety considerations for effective ferry operations.
