RMAFC, JRB Deepen Collaboration on Revenue Reforms

By Elizabeth Christopher, Abuja

The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting transparency, accountability and fairness in Nigeria’s revenue administration system as the country advances ongoing fiscal and tax reforms.

Chairman of the Commission, Dr Mohammed Bello Shehu, stated this while receiving a delegation from the Joint Revenue Board (JRB), led by its Executive Secretary, Mr Olusegun Adesokan, during a courtesy visit to the Commission in Abuja.

Dr Shehu said effective collaboration among key institutions remains critical to the success of ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening revenue generation, improving fiscal efficiency and ensuring equitable allocation of resources across the federation.

According to him, RMAFC remains committed to supporting government initiatives that enhance revenue administration while safeguarding taxpayers’ interests and promoting accountability.

“As key stakeholders in the nation’s fiscal architecture, we must work together to ensure that ongoing revenue reforms protect the interests of taxpayers while guaranteeing equitable revenue allocation across all levels of government,” he said.

The RMAFC chairman stressed the need for sustained stakeholder engagement, policy harmonisation and institutional cooperation to achieve the objectives of the reform agenda.

He also acknowledged concerns raised by stakeholders on aspects of the new tax framework, including revenue allocation, tax refunds and electronic transfer taxation, noting that continuous dialogue and technical consultations would help address emerging issues and strengthen public confidence in the system.

Dr Shehu expressed optimism that with effective implementation and cooperation among federal and sub-national institutions, Nigeria could witness significant improvements in revenue collection and fiscal efficiency within the next five to six years.

Earlier, the  Executive Secretary of the Joint Revenue Board, Mr Olusegun Adesokan, said the visit was aimed at strengthening collaboration between the Board and RMAFC to ensure the successful implementation of ongoing revenue reforms.

He noted that the reforms are designed to promote fairness, transparency and efficiency in tax administration while creating clearer revenue allocation mechanisms between federal and state governments.

Mr Adesokan said the Board was aware of concerns surrounding electronic money transfer levies, stamp duties, revenue attribution, tax refunds and advance tax payments, assuring that consultations with relevant stakeholders would continue to address the issues.

He reaffirmed the Board’s commitment to working closely with RMAFC and other stakeholders to ensure proper revenue attribution to states, taxpayer protection and improved compliance.

The JRB Executive Secretary also commended the Commission for its efforts in stakeholder engagement and expressed confidence that sustained collaboration and information sharing would enhance revenue generation and strengthen Nigeria’s fiscal framework.

Both organisations pledged to deepen cooperation in support of reforms aimed at improving revenue administration, protecting taxpayers and accelerating national development.
