The Inspector-General of Police, GP Olatunji Disu has approved the deployment of Deputy Inspectors-General of Police (DIGs) to the country’s geopolitical zones.
The move is part of the efforts to strengthen supervision, improve operational coordination, and enhance accountability across police commands nationwide.
The deployment, which takes effect from Monday, June 15, 2026, is aimed at providing closer strategic oversight of policing activities and improving the implementation of operational directives at the regional level.
Speaking during a conference with senior police officers in Abuja Nigeria’s capital, the IGP said; “the initiative aligns with the Force’s operational objectives and ongoing efforts to tackle security challenges across the country.”
According to him, “the newly deployed DIGs will work closely with Assistant Inspectors-General of Police (AIGs) and Commissioners of Police (CPs) to ensure effective execution of policing strategies and the achievement of measurable results.”
Successes Recorded
The Police Chief highlighted significant operational gains recorded by the Force since the last conference held on March 5, 2026.
He said that Police operatives arrested eight suspected terrorists, 29 suspects linked to murder and culpable homicide cases, 65 armed robbery suspects, 55 suspected kidnappers, and 42 suspects involved in other criminal activities.
The IGP further said that Police operations led to the rescue of 88 kidnap victims across various parts of the country.
In addition, a total of 114 firearms and 843 rounds of ammunition of different calibres were recovered during operations, while 28 stolen vehicles were also retrieved.
Providing an example of the Force’s intelligence-led policing strategy, Disu recounted a recent operation within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), where actionable intelligence indicated that five suspected kidnappers were on their way to Abuja to carry out criminal activities.
“Through coordinated intelligence and operational deployment, the suspects were successfully intercepted and arrested before they executed their plans,” he said.
Disu noted that the operation underscored the importance of proactive policing and demonstrated the effectiveness of intelligence-driven operations in preventing crimes before they occur.
The IGP attributed the achievements to the dedication, resilience, and professionalism of police personnel across the country, commending officers for operating under challenging and often dangerous conditions while remaining committed to their constitutional mandate of protecting lives and property.
He said; “This operation demonstrates the importance of proactive policing and the effectiveness of intelligence-driven operations in preventing crimes before they occur. This achievement demonstrates the dedication of our personnel and the effectiveness of coordinated policing strategies”
“It also reminds us that while much has been accomplished, much more remains to be done. I wish to express my profound appreciation for your dedication, sacrifice, resilience, and disdain for your responsibilities”
The Police boss also praised officers and men under various commands for their sacrifices and commitment to duty, stressing that while the Force had recorded notable successes, “more work remained to be done in addressing the nation’s security challenges.”
The deployment of DIGs to the geopolitical zones is expected to further enhance coordination among commands and strengthen the overall effectiveness of policing operations nationwide.
