The Former Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi ll has called on Nigerians to rise up to the responsibility of growing the Country’s economy and making it well for ordinary citizens.
He made the call at his inaugural colloquium which was held in Kaduna.
According to him, Nigerians have a responsibility as a people to rise and improve the lives of all citizens, saying, the responsibility is no longer about the government or political parties or the Emirs.
The former CBN Governor, therefore, advised citizens to acquire the knowledge of economics for a better Nigeria, as well as stand by the implications of the choices they make as citizens.
He disclosed that for every criticism he made on certain policies, he had to pay the price but that the real price is usually paid by Nigerians which can be seen in increased poverty, insecurity, high rate of inflation, loss in the value of the currency, in the numbers of malnutrition, unemployment, out of school children, maternal mortality as well as infant mortality.
“To the younger generation, the fears we have are grossly unfounded. When you find yourself in a community that is abnormal, one should not be a conformist”.
He attributed the seventeen percent of the problems being experienced in the country to lack of resources, saying, the economy needs to be grown and made well especially for the poor.
Speaking further on his colloquium, he mentioned that, his dream in life is to live by the values he has set for himself, stand by them and also face the consequences accordingly.
Sanusi ll said, one of the reasons why he’s able to handle many of his challenges, is because he has reliable friends who always stand by him.
“I consider myself very fortunate because of the calibre of friends I have. It is a blessing to have people who are with you in good times, who are with you for who you are”, he stressed.
One of the Guest speakers, Malam Ibrahim Kurawa who spoke on the topic ‘Muhammadu Sanusi II: The Reformer of Northern Traditional Institutions’ said the Emir’s multifaceted background influenced the many positions he held.
According to him, the former Emir’s modern and Islamic education helped him in making reforms within the Kano emirate which improved the lives of the people.
Kurawa explained that, while on the throne, Sanusi ll united the entire family by extending appointments to those family members who were neglected in the past.
“He was also the first Emir in the history of Kano who never had concubines, this had implications in the management of the palace”, Kurawa disclosed.
The speaker added that Sanusi ll also made fiscal improvements which were never done in the last 500 years. As an economist, it was part of his plans to contribute immensely to the economic growth of Kano State.
