The Member representing Enugu North/Enugu South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Chimaobi Atu, has outlined a range of constituency interventions and legislative activities undertaken to address developmental challenges and improve the welfare of residents.
Presenting his stewardship account in Enugu State, Atu said the initiatives span education, healthcare, youth empowerment, infrastructure, security and lawmaking.
In the education sector, the lawmaker disclosed that more than 800 students are currently benefiting from his scholarship programme. He added that his office has paid West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and National Examinations Council (NECO) examination fees for students, rehabilitated the Chemistry Laboratory at Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), renovated science laboratories in several secondary schools and constructed new basic science laboratories.
According to him, classroom blocks have also been constructed in selected primary schools to improve the learning environment.
On human capital development, Atu said women and youths across the constituency have benefited from various skills acquisition and empowerment programmes.
He stated that over 350 women and youths were trained in chemical production, while more than 200 youths received training in artificial intelligence to equip them with relevant digital skills.
The lawmaker further noted that women farmers were supported with agricultural inputs, while poultry farmers received birds, feed and other resources to enhance their businesses.
In the health sector, Atu said medical outreach programmes were organised to improve access to healthcare services, particularly for residents in rural communities.
According to him, the outreach programmes provided medical attention to vulnerable groups, including elderly persons who may have limited access to healthcare facilities.
To strengthen security within the constituency, Atu said solar-powered streetlights were installed across the 26 wards, noting that improved lighting can contribute to community safety.
On legislative activities, the lawmaker disclosed that he has sponsored 17 bills, four motions and two petitions since assuming office in the National Assembly.
Among the proposed bills are those seeking the establishment of a Federal Medical Centre in Ugwuaji-Awkunanaw, a National Football Academy in Enugu State and an Erosion Control and Prevention Commission in Enugu. He also cited a bill seeking the repeal of the Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection Act No. 119 of 1995.
He further highlighted motions and petitions addressing issues such as gully erosion and insecurity in parts of the constituency, including concerns raised over reported killings and security challenges in Amechi and Obeagu communities of Enugu South Local Government Area.
On infrastructure development, Atu said road projects remain a priority. He explained that initial efforts focused on the grading of rural roads before the commencement of strategic road construction projects aimed at improving connectivity between communities and commercial centres.
The projects, according to him, include the Ndafuafa Ndiaga Ugwuaji–Obeagu Community Link Road, the Eke Market–Afor Market Obeagu Road Network, Pa Michael Atu Street Road and Chief Benjamin Street Road, which are at various stages of completion.
Atu said the interventions were designed to address the needs of constituents and support socio-economic development across communities in the Enugu North and Enugu South Federal Constituencies.
