Nigeria and China are set to hold a political consultation meeting in July 2026 aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and advancing cooperation in key sectors.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Dunoma Ahmed, made this known during a meeting with the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, in Abuja.
Ambassador Ahmed reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to deepening its strategic partnership with China, describing the relationship as vital to the country’s foreign policy and economic development goals.
He noted that the upcoming consultations and the Nigeria-China Sub-Committee Meeting would provide an opportunity to align priorities and expand cooperation.
Ambassador Yu said the meeting would review progress made since President Bola Tinubu’s state visit to China in September 2024 and assess the implementation of agreements reached by both countries.
He highlighted achievements in infrastructure, trade, industrialisation, power generation and railway modernisation, while commending the impact of China’s zero-tariff policy for eligible Nigerian exports, which took effect in May 2026.
The Chinese envoy also expressed China’s readiness to deepen cooperation with Nigeria in peace and security, counter-terrorism, artificial intelligence governance, education, cultural exchanges and youth development.
Reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to the One-China Policy, Ambassador Ahmed pledged continued collaboration in agriculture, ICT, transportation, healthcare, education and human capital development.
Both countries expressed confidence in the continued growth of their strategic partnership and pledged to maintain close consultations in pursuit of shared development goals.
