Supreme Court Launches Digital Case Management Platform

By Charles Ogba, Abuja

Nigeria’s Supreme Court has launched a nationwide digital case management platform and introduced mandatory electronic filing requirements for appeals.

This move is aimed at modernising judicial administration, improving efficiency, strengthening record security and aligning the country’s justice system with global standards.

Announcing the reform in Abuja, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, said the implementation of the Nigerian Case Management System (NCMS) and the Supreme Court’s new Practice Directions on the mandatory upload of electronic court documents mark a significant step toward a fully digitised judiciary.

“Across the world, courts are increasingly embracing technology as a critical tool for improving case management, enhancing access to justice, preserving institutional records and ensuring the timely resolution of disputes.

“The Judiciary in Nigeria cannot afford to remain on the sidelines of this global transformation,” she said.

According to the CJN, the initiative is designed to digitalise the Supreme Court’s registry operations, reduce reliance on paper-based processes and improve case tracking, document management and record retrieval.

She further stated that the system will also create secured digital repositories and audit trails for court filings, helping to safeguard records against unauthorised alteration, manipulation, loss or misuse.

The Chief Justice stressed that the success of the reform would depend not only on technology but also on professional integrity.

She warned legal practitioners against uploading forged, altered or unauthorised documents, saying any misconduct would attract legal, regulatory and disciplinary sanctions.

“The administration of justice depends fundamentally upon the honesty, ethical conduct and professionalism of all stakeholders. Technology is only as reliable as those entrusted with its use,” she stated.

Comprehensive Review

She disclosed that the Supreme Court is simultaneously conducting a comprehensive review and verification of pending appeals and court records to strengthen confidence in the integrity of its processes.

The chief Registrar of the Supreme Court, Kabir Akanbi, said the unveiling of the digital platform marks a significant milestone in the continuing modernisation of the Nigerian Judiciary.

“To further facilitate citizen’s adoption, we have developed comprehensive digital manuals that will provide guidance and support for ease of navigation of the system,” he said.

President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Afam Osigwe, stressed the need for greater technological innovation in the justice sector, and pledged the association’s support for the successful implementation of the initiative.

He urged legal practitioners to embrace digital transformation to improve service delivery and keep pace with evolving court processes.
