North-East Nigeria Launches 300 Electric Tricycles

A 300-unit electric tricycle transportation scheme has been launched in Adamawa State to provide affordable, environmentally friendly transport and stimulate economic activities across Nigeria’s North-East.

The initiative, introduced by P-GAT Industries Limited under its Affordable Transport Solution (ATRaS) programme in partnership with the governments of the six North-East states, will initially operate in Yola and Numan. Transport fares are expected to be about 50 per cent lower than current rates.

Speaking at the launch in Numan, President of the Institute of Safety Professionals of Nigeria (ISPON), Timothy Iwuagwu, urged investors to take advantage of the economic opportunities in the North-East, assuring them that the region remains open for business.

Iwuagwu said his visit to the region had shown that conditions on the ground were far better than often portrayed, noting that “residents continue to live and work normally.”

While acknowledging existing security challenges, he stressed that no part of the country should be abandoned because of the activities of criminal elements.

According to him, “increased investment in the region would create jobs, stimulate economic growth and contribute to long-term stability.”

Iwuagwu also emphasised the need for comprehensive safety training for electric tricycle operators to ensure the safe use of the vehicles.

He said “beneficiaries should undergo compulsory training on battery charging, electrical systems, equipment handling and emergency response, while regular refresher courses should also be introduced.”

Iwuagwu further advocated renewed investment in technical education, describing skills development as critical to Nigeria’s industrialisation and technological advancement.

Speaking at the ATRaS Mobility Transition Summit, Chairman of P-GAT Industries Limited, Prime Timothy, described the initiative as a sustainable response to rising transportation costs and said the company plans to expand the scheme across the North-East.

Representatives of the six North-East states attended the launch, with Borno and Taraba states expressing readiness to adopt the initiative immediately.
