The African Union (AU) has condemned the coordinated terrorist attacks that targeted several localities across northern, central and southern Mali, reaffirming its support for the country’s efforts to combat terrorism and restore peace.
In a statement issued on Monday, Chairperson of the AU Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, described the attacks, carried out on Saturday, as a serious threat to Mali, the Sahel region and the African continent.
Youssouf said the attacks underscored the persistent danger posed by terrorism and violent extremism, stressing the need for stronger collective action to enhance peace, security and stability while ensuring the protection of civilians.

He reaffirmed the AU’s unwavering commitment to supporting the Malian authorities, as well as regional and continental initiatives aimed at combating terrorism and promoting lasting peace across Mali and the wider Sahel.
The AU Commission Chairperson also expressed solidarity with the government and people of Mali, extending condolences to the families of those killed and sympathy to all victims affected by the attacks.
Meanwhile, the Malian Armed Forces said on Saturday that the attacks on several military positions had been successfully repelled, adding that the security situation was fully under control.
Mali has battled persistent insecurity for years, with armed groups carrying out frequent attacks, particularly in the country’s northern and central regions.
