Moldovan President Maia Sandu on Saturday nominated 44-year-old financier Vasile Tofan as the country’s new prime minister.
Tofan, a senior partner at investment firm Horizon Capital, backed Sandu in the 2024 presidential election and supported her PAS party during the 2025 parliamentary election.
His nomination follows the resignation of former Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu earlier this month. Munteanu said he was leaving office because he could no longer perform his duties in line with his convictions but offered no further explanation.
At the time, Sandu thanked Munteanu for his service and for initiating “difficult but needed reforms”.

Speaking after his nomination, Tofan outlined three priorities: rebuilding public trust, restoring confidence among Moldovan businesses, and advancing the country’s bid to join the European Union.
“The goal of my government is to sign an agreement on Moldova’s accession to the EU by the end of 2028,” he told a press conference.
Moldova, located between Ukraine and EU member Romania, has a Romanian-speaking majority and a sizeable Russian-speaking minority. Its political landscape has long alternated between parties favouring closer integration with Europe and those advocating stronger ties with Moscow.
