Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to sustaining the education reforms introduced under the United Kingdom-funded Partnership for Learning for All in Nigeria (PLANE) programme, pledging to build on the achievements recorded over the past five years.
The Governor made the commitment through the Commissioner for Education, Dr Ali Abubakar Haruna Makoda, who represented him at the PLANE Transition Workshop in Kano.
In a statement issued by the Governor’s Spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, he disclosed that Governor Yusuf described education as the foundation of sustainable development and assured stakeholders that his administration would continue implementing policies aimed at improving learning outcomes across the state.

He said the government would consolidate the gains of the PLANE programme by strengthening education planning, enhancing teacher development, expanding access to quality teaching and learning materials, and ensuring that every child has access to quality education.
Governor Yusuf commended the United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), PLANE, Save the Children International and other consortium partners for their support in advancing educational development in Kano State.
He noted that one of the programme’s key achievements was the generation of credible data on out-of-school children through a comprehensive household survey, which has enabled the government to design targeted interventions to address the challenge.
The governor also praised the programme’s contribution to improving foundational literacy and numeracy through extensive teacher training and the provision of instructional materials to schools across the state.
He assured development partners that the reforms introduced under the PLANE programme would be institutionalised and sustained, while the government would continue investing in initiatives that promote quality education and improve pupil performance.
Governor Yusuf further reiterated his administration’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with local and international development partners to ensure the long-term sustainability of the programme’s achievements.
As part of the workshop, the Commissioner for Education presented a Letter of Appreciation to the PLANE programme, which was received by the Education Manager of Save the Children International, Stephen Sawa, in recognition of its contributions to education development in Kano State, particularly its support for the Accelerated Basic Education Programme (ABEP).
The workshop brought together representatives of the British High Commission, UNICEF, development partners, civil society organisations, education stakeholders and senior government officials.
Participants endorsed key transition strategies aimed at strengthening government ownership and institutional collaboration to sustain the reforms and improve educational outcomes across the state.
