The kingdom of Spain has affirmed its commitment to strengthening cultural ties with Nigeria through artistic exchange.
First Secretary at the Embassy of the Kingdom of Spain, Juan Diego Dembour, said this at a live stage performance by Spanish musician Niño de Elche in Abuja.
The performance, held at the National Universities Commission (NUC) Auditorium, attracted a diverse audience comprising members of Abuja’s entertainment industry, government officials, students, culture enthusiasts and the diplomatic community.
Dembour said the Spanish artiste represents a new generation of performers using music to question established norms while preserving the essence of Spain’s rich cultural heritage.
“Culture is one of the strongest bridges between our two countries. Through music and the arts, we create opportunities for people to understand each other better and celebrate our shared humanity,” he said.
Dembour described Niño de Elche as one of Spain’s most innovative contemporary performers, noting that the artiste has redefined flamenco by questioning its traditional boundaries while preserving its emotional depth.

“Niño de Elche represents a contemporary Spain that respects tradition but is also courageous enough to innovate. His work demonstrates that culture is alive—it evolves, inspires dialogue and brings people together,” he added.
Music as a Bridge
Trained as a traditional flamenco singer, or cantaor, Niño de Elche has earned international acclaim for moving beyond orthodox flamenco into an experimental, contemporary style, earning him the description of an “anti-flamenco” artiste.
Addressing the audience, Niño de Elche expressed his admiration for Nigeria, describing the country as a place blessed with vibrant musical traditions and warm-hearted people.

“Nigeria is beautiful. It has an incredibly rich culture of music, and from the moment we arrived, we have experienced nothing but warmth, love and hospitality from the people. It has been a privilege to perform here,” he said.
He noted that music remains a universal language capable of connecting people across cultures and continents.
Audience Enthralled
The audience were fascinated as the Spanish performer blended traditional flamenco elements with avant-garde sounds, creating a unique musical experience that earned repeated applause.

His thought-provoking performance challenged conventional perceptions of flamenco while preserving the emotional intensity and expressive storytelling that have made the genre one of Spain’s most celebrated cultural exports.
Shared Cultural Heritage
The highpoint of the evening was a collaborative performance between Niño de Elche and a cultural troupe from the National Council for Arts and Culture (NCAC).

The joint presentation fused the passion and rhythm of Spanish flamenco with vibrant Nigerian dance, percussion and traditional performance, producing a colourful display of cultural dialogue that drew a standing ovation from the audience.
The collaboration underscored the growing cultural partnership between Spain and Nigeria, highlighting the power of the performing arts to foster mutual understanding, creativity and enduring people-to-people ties.
