The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC) have agreed to strengthen collaboration on climate services, climate data management and national climate resilience initiatives to support evidence-based policy-making and climate action in Nigeria.
The agreement was reached during a courtesy visit by the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike, to the Director-General of the National Council on Climate Change Secretariat, Dr. Tenioye Majekodunmi.
During the meeting, Prof. Anosike reaffirmed NiMet’s role as the custodian of Nigeria’s long-term meteorological records, noting that the agency provides the baseline atmospheric data required for climate trend analysis, climate risk assessment and the development of reliable climate projections.

He called for closer collaboration between the two institutions in developing climate projections, strengthening early warning systems, standardising climate data and undertaking joint research to support informed decision-making and effective climate policies.
“Enhanced collaboration will provide policymakers with localised, science-based information needed to implement effective climate adaptation and mitigation strategies while improving the downscaling of global climate projections into practical advisories for communities and climate-sensitive sectors,” Prof. Anosike said.
The NiMet Director-General also stressed that reliable meteorological and climate data are critical for accessing international climate finance, adding that both organisations could jointly pursue funding opportunities to support climate resilience, early warning systems and climate infrastructure projects.
Responding, the Director-General of the National Council on Climate Change Secretariat, Dr. Tenioye Majekodunmi, commended NiMet for its contributions to weather and climate services in Nigeria and expressed support for closer institutional collaboration.
He welcomed the proposal to deepen cooperation, with both institutions agreeing to formalise their partnership through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
The proposed agreement will cover collaboration in climate services, climate data management, climate research, early warning systems, capacity development and other areas of mutual interest.
The meeting reaffirmed the commitment of both institutions to advancing Nigeria’s climate agenda through stronger institutional partnerships, improved climate services and science-driven strategies aimed at protecting lives, livelihoods and the environment.
