From Olubunmi Osoteku, Ibadan

The Governing Council of the University of Ibadan has appointed Professor Peter Olapegba as the 14th Vice-Chancellor of the institution after what it described as a very thorough, transparent, and highly competitive exercise.

At its meeting on Wednesday, 22 July, 2026, the Governing Council considered the report of the Selection Board and approved its recommendation to appoint Professor Olapegba as the next Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan.

A statement by the university’s Directorate of Public Communication said the post of vice-chancellor will become vacant on 01 November, 2026, and that, in accordance with the provisions of the extant rules, the Governing Council initiated the appointment process.

It disclosed that advertisements were placed in April 2026 in three (3) national newspapers and the official university bulletin. At the expiration of the advertisement period, six (6) applications were received for the position.

In line with the University Act, the Search Team was subsequently constituted to identify suitable persons who might not apply of their own volition. At the end of the exercise, two additional applications were received, bringing the number of applicants to eight (8).

The statement said that on Tuesday, 21 July 2026, members of the Council interacted with all eight (8) candidates and scored them using approved Council guidelines. It noted that at the end of the exercise, five (5) candidates, in order of merit, were shortlisted for the final interview.

At the meeting, two (2) members of the Council, as required by law, were also appointed to serve on the Selection Board for the appointment of the vice-chancellor, while earlier in the week, the Senate had elected two (2) of its members to serve on the Board.

Consequently, on Wednesday, 22 July, 2026, the Joint Council-Senate Selection Board interviewed the five (5) shortlisted candidates, and Professor Peter Olapegba emerged as the best candidate for the position of 14th vice-chancellor of the University of Ibadan.

The statement revealed that Professor Olapegba is the current Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) of the university.
